30 Palestinian Officials Assassinated By Israel in One Year

Assassinations are an Israeli policy towards Palestinians

By IOL Palestine Office

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, June 4 (IslamOnline) - A Palestinian report indicated a rise of assassination crimes against Palestinian activists, adding that Israeli acts of liquidation and execution are a breach of international law.

Article 3 of the International Human Rights Declaration emphasizes the right to ‘live’ and feel free and secure as a basic human right, the report issued by the Palestinian Human Rights Center said.

Between the period of April 29, 2001 and April 30, 2002 there have been 30 assassination crimes which have affected 85 Palestinians, 43 targeted and 16 not targeted, out of which 8 were children. There were 58 Palestinians injured between moderate and serious injuries, six of them targeted and 52 untargeted out of which several were children.

The report said that since the start of the intifada on September 29, 2000, until April 30, 2002, there have been 71 murder crimes in which 111 targeted civilians were killed in. In addition, there were 34 civilians killed in these crimes, including 11 children.

These crimes, the report said, were carried out by a specific unit of the Israeli army

Called the “special unit” or the “death team”. They were carried out using different methods such as:

- Firing missiles at the car of the “wanted” person

- Firing at the “wanted” person by snipers who stand a short distance away from the person at the Israeli checkpoints.

- Placing explosives that are detonated by a remote control inside the car of the “wanted” person or at the sides of the road which he will pass through.

- Surrounding the victim with special units which fire at him.

Meanwhile, the specified period of time also witnessed a change in the targeting of Palestinian civilians which was reflected in the callous attitude towards the lives of Palestinians while the assassinations are carried out. Three assassinations were carried out in which 8 children lost their lives.

On December 12, 2001, two Apache helicopters struck a number of civilian cars which were stopping at a traffic light at a cross road in the city of Al-Khalil (Hebron) targeting Mohamad Ayoub Sidr, an activist in the Islamic Jihad Movement. Two children Burhan Al-Yihmoni, 3, and Shady Arafa, 13, who were in a nearby cab were also killed, and 14 civilians were wounded, two of them seriously.

On March 4, 2002, an Israeli tank fired a missile at a civilian car belonging to Hussein Abu Kweik, one of the leaders of the Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas in Ramallah. He was not in the car but his wife and three children who were inside, were killed. Two other children who were in a car behind them were also killed. Ten nearby pedestrians were seriously injured in the incident.

On February 19, 2002, the Israeli occupation forces assassinated two Hamas activists in the Jabalya refugee camp. An Israeli helicopter fired a missile toward Hamas’ media office. Those targeted were killed, in addition to Inas Ibrahiim Salah, 9, who was severely injured and died nearly two weeks later.
