ABU
DHABI, May 13 (IslamOnline) - Marking the occasion of Nakba
(Catastrophe), which is the creation of the state of Israel 54 years
ago, the UAE National Boycott Committee will display a 200 meter map
of Palestine which will show Palestinian villages before they were
destroyed by Israeli occupation forces.
This
will take place during a ceremony which will be held on Thursday, May
16 which will also include a photo gallery depicting the reality of
Palestinian refugee life in camps on the borders of nearby countries.
Several
UAE and Arab thinkers will present lectures about the Arab-Israeli
conflict after the latest West Bank offensive and about massacres
committed by Israeli occupation forces as well as America’s
insistence of looking at the Palestinian crisis through Israeli eyes.
The
committee will also collaborate with the Organization of the
Palestinian’s Right of Return, which is based in London, to gather
the signatures of Palestinians residing in the UAE to ensure their
right of return in order to refute the claims that the Palestinians
residing abroad are unwilling to return to their land.
Meanwhile,
the first Boycott Conference to be held in the region has started its
program in the emirate of Dubai, organized by the UAE National Boycott
Committee and will continue for two days with participation from the
Arab League as well as 25 Arab researchers and activists in the field
of boycotting.
The
conference is the first joint project between the Arab boycotting and
anti-normalization committees and the Arab civil organization which
will work on activating the people’s role in opposing Israeli
practices in the Palestinian territories and the U.S.’s role in
supporting the aggressors.
The
conference was opened by a speech broadcast from Ramallah by Dr.
Mustafa Al Barghouthi, director of Palestinian media and the head of
the Palestinian Relief Committee. The opening remarks were followed by
presentations which discussed the idea of boycotting from its
economical, political, social and cultural aspects.
The
participants will also present people’s boycott experiences in
Egypt, Lebanon, Yemen and Jordan as well as Gulf, European and Indian
experiences.
The
aim of these presentations is to transfer the individual consumer
efforts to a stance that would help the Palestinian cause in
supporting the idea of boycotting American products and services in
order to put pressure on American policies which support Israel and
especially companies and organizations that support Israel with
millions of dollars every year.
The
first session of the conference will focus on the general framework of
the boycott and will discuss three working papers on the concept of
boycotting, its reasons and boycotting experiences in history as well
as the legal framework of boycotting.
The
second session will focus on the economical aspect discussing three
working papers on effective boycotting and the limits and boundaries
of the boycott. The third and fourth sessions will be an over view of
Arab and non-Arab boycotting experiences.
The
second day of the conference will discuss the political aspects of the
boycott through a paper called “The Power of People’s Unity”,
another paper titled “Boycotting and the Arab Regional Regime” and
a third paper called “Boycotting and the American Policies.”
It
will also discuss social aspects of the boycott, including the role of
civil organizations, educational institutes and women. The final
session of the conference will speak about the cultural role of the
media as well as the creative role in the boycott and the issue of
“The Cinema and the Boycott”.
Speaking
on the conference, Dr. Aisha Al-Nuami, the head of the UAE National
Boycott committee and professor in the Faculty of Journalism in the
UAE University, told IslamOnline: “The conference is an important
step in coordinating everyone’s efforts to activate the boycott. It
is a chance to exchange experiences among all those involved in the
field in the Arab world and to encourage activists to work
together.”
She
added that the boycott campaign which the committee has adopted is
receiving more popular responses as the number of those signing up as
members in the committee has increased.
Al-Nuaimi
also said that the campaign was not only popular among the Arabs and
nationals living in the UAE, but was also popular among the Muslim and
foreign communities living there. “Despite the fact that foreigners
constitute a large proportion of the population in the UAE, many of
them are Muslims who are sympathetic with the Palestinian cause and
the atrocities they face,” she said.
She
also said that the committee will work along with those sympathizing
in order to strengthen the campaign.
