Several Arab Countries Want Sharon Behind Bars

TEHRAN, April 14 (IslamOnline& News Agencies) – Many Arab and Islamic countries as well as human rights organizations call for a fair trial to Sharon for his outrageous violations of human rights in the past and the constant atrocities he is still committing against Palestinians.

Iran called Sunday for Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to be brought before the new international criminal court, accusing him of responsibility for "massacres" by the Israeli army in the Jenin refugee camp.

"The international court, must prosecute Zionist officials, headed by Ariel Sharon and Israeli Defence Minister Binyamin Ben Eliezer, who claims that the Palestinian death toll was "dozens and not hundreds" as previously reported, dismissing Palestinian claims of a "massacre."
Yet, Ahmad Abdelarahman, secretary general of the Palestinian Authority, disputed Ben Eliezer's new estimate of the number of deaths and accused the Israelis of seeking to "cover up their crimes and massacres."

Also, Kuwait among other countries denounces the status quo in the Middle East and demands that a lawsuit must be filed against Sharon in the International Court of Law for the atrocities committed against human rights.

Speaking to the Kuwaiti daily newspaper, Al Watan, on Sunday, April 14, Nasser Al Haifi, the trustee of the Kuwaiti Lawyers’ Association made the announcement that they will demand Sharon be tried as a war criminal.

“This idea has been around ever since the start of the Intifada in the Palestinian occupied territories…”
Al Haifi added that all lawyers in the world must stand by the Palestinians to present “this criminal to the International Court of Law as a war criminal.”

Several Arab and Egyptian human rights organizations have started gathering data that proves Sharon’s involvement in war crimes and crimes against humanity, not only in the last military offensive, but also in the past.

Mohammad Faeq, director of the Arab Association for Human Rights said that he has decided to legally pursue Sharon as a war criminal.
He said that he felt he would succeed especially since the Knesset itself holds Sharon responsible for the Sabra and Shatila massacre.

Faeq also, stated that he would cooperate with the group of lawyers that filed law suits in Belgium and with the Lebanese victims of the massacre, who have also filed law suits in Lebanese courts, not to mention his co-work with Palestinian Islamic Movement leader Raed Salah who asked everyone in Palestine having a shred of evidence incriminating Sharon to present it to the Movement.

There are Egyptian documents in the ministry of defense that included the confessions of an Israeli general, who spoke of massacres committed against Egyptian prisoners of war.

Dr. Ibrahim Al Anani, professor of international law in Ain Shams University in Egypt said that there is a better chance now to prove Sharon’s involvement in a variety of crimes, all of which could lead him to the International Court of Law.

He added that in order to seriously develop this vital issue, Arab countries that were affected by Sharon’s crimes must present the Security Council with a proposal to form an International Court similar to the one that was set up for the Serb criminals.

If the United States used the veto to obstruct the formation of this court, then Arab and Islamic countries in the United Nations must ask for the application of the 1950 United for Peace Declaration, which tackles issues that the security council fails to deal with, he says.

In its turn Pakistan, Sunday demanded an international inquiry into the killings of Palestinians by Israeli forces. In the meantime, Pakistani Foreign Minister Abdul Sattar said in a statement to the Pakistan TV the inquiry should be immediate, comprehensive and impartial.

Sattar said the massacre of Palestinian refugees by Israeli forces added another chapter to the shameful annals of the crimes of the government of Ariel Sharon against the Palestinian people.

Israel had demonstrated its contempt for world opinion and defiance of the UN Security Council resolutions by refusing access to the international media and even the Red Cross and Red Crescent to certain areas, the statement said.
