extradited to US |
KARACHI,
March 2 (Islam Online) - Wife of Sheikh Omar Saeed, the alleged mastermind of
Wall Street Journal reporter Denial Pearl’s kidnapping has filed a petition in
a Pakistani court saying that her husband should not be extradited to United
States as “ it would be a violation of the country’s constitution”.
The
court, while accepting the petition of Omar’s wife, Sadia, for hearing, Friday
issued notices to Advocate General of Sindh Province to appear before the court
on March 05, 2001 and explain the government opinion. In her petition, Sadia
said that her husband was “innocent”, and had nothing to do with Pearl’s
kidnapping or killing.
She
contended that her husband had not been arrested by police but he voluntarily
gave himself in. “If the government has any proof against him (her husband) ,
it should be produced before the Pakistani courts”, she maintained.
Sadia
presented clippings of local and international newspapers claiming that Omar was
going to extradited to the United States. She contended that her husband’s
extradition would be violation of the Extradition Act 1972 of the constitution.
British-born
Omar Saeed has been interrogating in southern port city of Karachi Since
February 12, 2002 for his alleged involvement in kidnapping and later killing of
Denial Pearl who went missing on January 23.
Later,
a grizzly videotape, which was sent to a local Pakistani news agency confirmed
Pearl’s death. U.S. officials want Omar to be extradited, while Pakistan is
looking for an “ appropriate” way to entertain the American demand.
