"All levels of the population will join hands" |
TEHRAN,
Feb. 10 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) - Iran's supreme leader called on
Iranians Sunday to turn out in force for the annual demonstration marking the
Islamic revolution on Monday, to "register once more their determination,
their strength and their intransigence towards America."
"The
people and officials of the regime will together take part Monday in the rally
of Bahman 22 (February 11) to show their unity, vitality, strength and
intransigence," Ayatollah Ali Khamenei added, AFP reported. He said that
recent "threatening and violent" comments of U.S. leaders against Iran
prove that "the enemies are disappointed by their subversive political
activities" in Iran.
On
January 29, U.S. President George W. Bush accused Iran, Iraq and North Korea of
forming "an axis of evil" and of supporting terrorism. According to
the Iranian leader, "Through their comments, the American leaders have
tried to terrorize the Iranian people and officials, and that is why Monday's
demonstration will have major importance.”
Last
week, Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned the U.S. that it
would regret any action it launched upon his country, reported BBC's online news
service.
The
1979 Islamic Revolution put an end to decades of humiliation of the Iranian
people under arrogant rulers and foreign powers with hegemonic ambitions,
Khamenei further stressed, reported Iranian News Agency (IRNA). He reminded
Iranian officials to fulfill their commitment towards the nation and not to let
the people down.
Iranian
President Mohammad Khatami also called on Iranians to take part in the
demonstration for the anniversary of the revolution, to "show their faith
in the Islamic regime after the verbal attacks by Washington. This participation
is more important than before because of the baseless, erroneous and insulting
comments against Iran," President Khatami added in a reference to the
recent accusations of U.S. leaders against Iran's Islamic regime.
Khatami
said on national television Saturday that February 11 "has always been and
always will be a symbol of the deliverance of the Iranian people from dependence
and humiliation the beginning of popular sovereignty in Iran. "All levels
of the population will join hands, without partisan considerations, and will
come to show their fidelity to the revolution and to the memory of Imam
Khomeini," he said.
In
his televised address, President Khatami said "all levels of the population
will join hands, without partisan considerations, and will come to show their
fidelity to the revolution" on Monday, 23 years after the overthrow of the
shah. Khatami said Bush's remarks "were insulting to the Iranian nation and
the Iranian people".
For
his part, Iranian parliamentary Speaker Mehdi Karubi, an ally of the moderate
president, called on people to participate in Monday's demonstration in Tehran
"even if they are political or ideological opponents of the regime."
Political
leaders, and senior scholars and the institutions of the Islamic regime have
over the last two days stepped up their calls for a "massive" turnout
in the demonstration of February 11.
State
radio and television have launched a major campaign to get people out to the
rally, urging the population to demonstrate on Monday and thereby give
"American leaders a punch in the face."
The
demonstration in Tehran and other rallies elsewhere in the country is the
culmination of 10 days of official celebrations to mark the 23rd anniversary of
the Islamic revolution which began with the triumphant return to Tehran of
Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the regime.
