Thailand Muslim Spiritual Leader Urges Neutrality

JAKARTA, Oct 1 (IslamOnline and News Agencies) - Muslims in Thailand should remain neutral in the wake of the September 11th terror attacks in the United States, Muslim spiritual leader Swas Sumalyasak said Sunday.

Swas also urged Muslims not to support any actions that had the potential to trigger conflict in the country.

Muslim independence seekers have been active in the recent past, attacking pro-administration supporters and fighting for an independent state in southern Thailand.

The aftermath of the attacks on the U.S., and the expected response against Afghanistan, has prompted Muslims in the country to rally in favor of the Taliban and Osama Bin Laden.

Badges, caps and t-shirts with bin Laden's effigies have become a hit in southern Thailand among Muslim youth who see the Arab mujahideen (fighter) as a hero.

However, Muslim leaders are not happy with the popular surge in Thailand.

"It is my view that Muslims in Thailand should be neutral and remain so, particularly those in the southern provinces. Thailand's constitution has already provided freedom and opportunities for Muslims in the country.

"As such, we should be aware of these and try to avoid any moves or actions that could cause conflict in our territory," Swas said.

Swas was speaking after he met with Communications Minister Wan Muhamad Noor Matha, also a Muslim.

The minister briefed Swas on the government's position and provided him with an assessment of the current situation after the deadly attacks on New York and Washington early last month.

A response by Muslims in Thailand towards the attacks would also be discussed when the Islam Central Committee of Thailand convened Monday, he added.

Both agreed that Thailand, as a member of the United Nations, should support U.N. resolutions on the matter, the minister said.

Muslims, in their majority, disagree, however, that Thailand should support the U.S. in any war against Muslim nations. This has caused tension to rise, with fears of a crackdown against Muslims becoming real.

"The Thai government is concerned about the feelings and attitudes of our Thai-Muslim brothers.

"We are now evaluating the situation and if necessary, the spiritual leader will go to the south to promote more understanding among the Muslims," the Thai minister said.

However, the present situation is still calm and there is nothing to worry about, he added.

The weekend meeting took place after reported attempts by local Muslim groups to stage a protest rally against the U.S., which has named bin Laden as the prime suspect behind the attacks.

The U.S. is currently preparing to launch attacks against targets in Afghanistan, a Muslim country, which has sheltered bin Laden.

Deputy Prime Minister General Chavalit Yongchaiyudh, who is scheduled to visit the southern province of Pattani, will also take the opportunity to meet local Muslims and exchange ideas and information, the minister said.
