Sudan to Cooperate Against All Forms of Terrorism, Including Israeli

KHARTOUM, Sept 30 (News Agencies) - The Sudanese government pledged Sunday to cooperate with all countries in the fight against terrorism, which it said is "not linked to a certain religion, race or culture," news agencies reported.

"The Sudan renews its readiness for cooperation with all countries of the world for fighting international terrorism, which is not linked with a specific religion, race or culture," said a statement issued by the Council of Ministers, following a meeting chaired by President Omar al-Beshir.

The statement also hailed a decision by the U.N. Security Council to lift sanctions imposed on Sudan since 1995.

"The decision was the fruit of a realistic policy by the government for cooperation with the international community," the statement said, adding Khartoum's "close" observance of the sanctions "convinced the world of the Sudan's sincere efforts for maintaining international peace and security."

It suggested that the international community "should subject the phenomenon to a thorough study with a view to resolving it within the United Nations."

The Sudanese Council of Ministers called upon the Security Council to "pursue its appreciated efforts and conduct a comprehensive revision of sanctions it has imposed on other countries for prevalence of justice and equality and for boosting confidence by the international community in the United Nations."

It also drew the attention of the international community to the terrorism "being practiced by Israel" against the Palestinian people, accusing the Jewish state of killing Palestinians and destroying their belongings, a matter that the cabinet said "violates all international conventions."

A senior politician, meanwhile, has vowed that the Khartoum government would not relinquish Shari'ah (Islamic law), and would continue backing Muslim causes.

The leader of Sudan's ruling party, National Congress Secretary General Ibrahim Ahmed Omar, told reporters Sunday that, "there is a clear difference between terrorism and jihad [struggle] and between terrorism and liberation movements," news agencies reported

"We are not prepared to abandon Islam for supporting a specific position," said Omar, adding, "We respect the right of Afghanistan in implementing Islamic Shari'ah and demanding evidence" of Osama bin Laden's alleged involvement in recent attacks in the U.S.
