Mosque Attacked in Belfast

BELFAST, Sept 14 (News Agencies) - A Mosque located in the Wellington Park area of Belfast, Northern Ireland, was attacked Friday causing some damage to the building.

Three bricks were thrown at the masjid, completely smashing two windows. No one was reported injured.

The incident, apparently in retaliation for the attacks in U.S., has been condemned by politicians. Sinn Fein MLA Alex Maskey said: "An attack on any place of worship is completely reprehensible - no less so the mosque which was attacked this morning.

"To use the tragedy in America as a mask for such attacks is merely to mask intolerance and racism.

"Those who carried out this attack should desist immediately. Intolerance and racism can have no place in our society."

Hate crimes have been on the increase in Ireland and the United Kingdom, as well as other Western countries. Incidents ranging from racial taunts to outright threats have shaken the thriving Muslim communities in these areas.

Ahmed Versi, editor of the London-based Muslim News told Annanova news: "The central London mosque was evacuated at 3pm yesterday after receiving a bomb threat. Now only a third of people are turning up for a health fair there. They say they are too scared to come along.

"We have been inundated with e-mails and calls from Muslims everywhere, who have been threatened over the last couple of days," he added.
