Sudanese Opposition Leader To Come To U.S.

WASHINGTON, June 1 (IslamOnline) - Controversial Sudanese opposition leader Sadek al-Mehdi is due to arrive next week in Washington to discuss his country's continuing crisis, as well as recent efforts to find a negotiated settlement between President Omar al-Bashir and the southern opposition groups.

Speaking to news agencies, Al-Mehdi, chief of Umma party, said that his U.S. trip will start next Tuesday and that his talks with U.S. officials will focus on proposals to stop the bloody conflict between government troops and southern rebel forces led by John Garang.

The U.S. has already suggested some proposals and Al-Mehdi plans to discuss them in detail.

Al-Mehdi is currently attending the 13th Conference of the Higher Council for Islamic Affairs, and has met Egyptian officials and Arab-League Secretary General Amr Moussa.

He also said that he is scheduled to meet John Garang, leader of the Popular Army for Liberation of Sudan next month to discuss the situation in Sudan and to find possible solutions to the conflict.
