Kashmiri Independence Leader Contacted By India

SRINAGAR, India, May 15 (News Agencies) - An envoy of India's chief negotiator on Kashmir delivered a letter to independence leader Shabir Shah Tuesday with answers to queries raised on peace talks to decide the future of the region.

According to envoy Narish Kumar, K.C. Pant's letter also contains an invitation for Shah to visit New Delhi for talks.

Shah said he would take a decision on the letter after consulting members of his pro-independence Democratic Freedom Party (DFP).

So far, Shah has been the only Kashmiri political leader who has shown interest in New Delhi's offer for unconditional talks.

The All Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC), Kashmir's main alliance of political groups, had rejected the offer arguing that any dialogue on Kashmir's future must include Pakistan.

Kashmiri independence outfits have rejected Pant's talks offer and warned that any group entering into a dialogue with New Delhi would be branded traitors and dealt with severely.

Muslim-majority Kashmir has been divided between India and Pakistan since 1947 and is claimed by both. Most the population favors either joining Pakistan or total independence.

The conflict in Indian-held Kashmir has claimed more than 34,000 lives since 1989, according to Indian figures. Kashmiri leaders say the death toll is twice as high.
