Jordanian Muslim Brotherhood To Boycott Elections

by Tareq Ayyoub

AMMAN, Jan 28 (IslamOnline) - The powerful Muslim Brotherhood on Sunday reiterated their stand to boycott Jordanian parliamentary elections and said they would only reconsider their position if the government changes the current Elections Law.

"In regard to the Elections Law. The council has endorsed the declared stand of the group and the methodology of the executive council with regard to the elections law," the one-page Brotherhood statement, issued following its Shura Council meeting, said.

In 1997, the Muslim Brotherhood boycotted parliamentary elections following the introduction of the One-Man, One-Vote elections law, which many perceived specifically targeted the group, known for its anti-Israeli and Western stands.

The government has submitted an amendment to the current Elections Law to parliament, but lawmakers said that it is unlikely to change the current system. But they do not rule out minor changes to the law.

The parliament is expected to debate the Draft Elections law next month.

The Brotherhood has repeatedly said that they will boycott the November 2001 elections if the government does not change the current elections law.
