JAKARTA (IslamOnline) - Malaysian Foreign Affairs Minister Datuk Seri (title given to top officials) Syed Hamid Albar issued yesterday strongly denied Malaysia had any links to the string of bombings on Christmas Eve in Indonesia.
Albar categorically denied that Malaysia was involved in the bombings that took place simultaneously in several Indonesian districts, killing 17 and injuring at least one hundred more.
The bombings targeted the Indonesian Christian community and has been initially linked to Muslims trained in Afghanistan, according to the police.
Another police report some three weeks ago stated that Indonesian investigators did not write off the possibility that those behind the bombings had links with Malaysia, which could have been used to get bomb supplies.
The foreign news agency report was baseless and without any truth, the Foreign Affairs Minister said.
"The report is baseless and devoid of truth. Because of this till now there has been no protest, letters or request [from the Indonesian Government] for an explanation [from Malaysia]," he told reporters at Wisma Putra Thursday.
He said the Malaysian government would not entertain any speculation or provocation by anyone out to cause trouble between Malaysia and Indonesia.
"The report is based on possibilities. This is a wild allegation. If we react to items reported in the press, whose basis and truth is uncertain, this matter will then be prolonged," Albar said.
He said foreign media frequently negatively report on Malaysia and that this would not affect Malaysia's standing as a peace-loving nation.
"If they come up with valid evidence, we will of course help them in their investigations. But if this is only media speculation, it cannot be turned into evidence," he said.
