Lebanese Shepherd Injured After Stepping On Israeli Landmine

SAIDA, Lebanon (AFP) - An 18-year-old Lebanese shepherd was injured Friday after stepping on an Israeli landmine in the former Israeli-occupied border zone in southern Lebanon, police said.

Ali Hassan Zuhur was injured as he was leading his sheep near the Beaufort chateau, in the former Israeli-occupied zone.

Nine Lebanese civilians have been killed and 61 others injured by landmines since the May 24th Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon. A dozen Lebanese troops have also been injured during mine clearing operations.

The U.N. estimates that there are at least 130,000 Israeli mines and unexploded shells remaining in southern Lebanon.

On November 14th, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon announced that its mine clearing units had removed 1,520 explosive devices.
