IslamOnline Poll Says Egypt Will Send Ambassador Back

WASHINGTON (IslamOnline) – IslamOnline visitors believe the government of Egypt will send their ambassador back to Israel and resume relations with the Jewish state before issues surrounding the current Palestinian Intifada are solved.

In a poll conducted by IslamOnline during the week of November 25th to December 3rd, 338 site visitors participated in a poll asking whether or not they believed Egypt’s recall of its ambassador from Israel in protest of the Jewish state’s excessive use of force against Palestinian protestors would last throughout the Intifada, or whether Egypt would resume relations before issues surrounding the current uprising were resolved.

Of those who participated in the poll, 63% (214) visitors believed that Egypt’s ambassador recall from Israel would not last before issues were solved.

However, 37% of IslamOnline poll participants believed that Egypt’s ambassador recall would last throughout the Intifada.

Egypt recalled its ambassador to Israel two weeks ago amid rising pressure after the conclusion of two summit meetings – the Arab League in Cairo and the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) in Doha, Qatar – in which no conclusive statement was issued specifically declaring that all Muslim and Arab nations cut relations with Israel.

As a host for one of the conferences, and as the largest Arab nation in the Muslim world, Egypt had come under mounting criticism for not acting upon recommendations made by the summits gathered together to tackle the very problem of Israel and the current Intifada.

However, as Palestinian casualties mounted and Israel seemed to be ignoring both criticism from the international community and human rights organizations condemning Israeli use of force as excessive, Egypt, in a surprise move, recalled its ambassador.

As the first Arab Muslim country to sign a peace treaty with Israel in 1979 and with which it maintained normal diplomatic relations, many observers believed Egypt would not be the first, or even the last, nation to cut ties with Israel.

Now that it has acted, IslamOnline desired to ask its site visitors whether they believed Egypt’s recall would last throughout the Palestinian uprising or whether normal relations between the nations would resume before issues surrounding the Intifada – the status of Jerusalem, the Palestinian right of return, and a declaration of Palestinian statehood, to mention a few of the important ones – were solved.

In answer to that, IslamOnline poll participants seem, by nearly two-thirds, to indicate that Egypt will resume normal relations with Israel before these issues are solved.
