DOHA (IslamOnline) - Analysts are anticipating that leaders gathered at the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) summit in Qatar will lift the economic sanctions imposed on the Iraqi people following the Gulf War in 1991.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa has showed optimism towards the resolutions of the summit, which he said would be beneficial to the entire Muslim world, and mentioned that the economic sanctions have exceeded their scope and time limit, and that all Muslim countries should support the Iraqi people.
A similar tone was sensed during Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi’s declarations to the press during summit
Kharazi described current diplomatic relations with Iraq as acceptable, but said that there are pending issues that need to be settled before full normalization of relations can begin, including those related to prisoners of war (POW) during their eight-year war in the 1980s against one another, and other issues related to border agreements made in 1975 between the two.
He also said that both sides should establish a committee to discuss the status of Iraqi airplanes transferred to Iran on the eve of the Gulf War.
Meanwhile, Esmat Abdul Mageed, General Secretary of the Arab League, said he appreciated OIC efforts to patch relations between Iraq and Kuwait, especially those initiated by the Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem bin Jabor al-Thani, who is currently working on an agenda to resolve the dispute and would report progress on the efforts to the summit.
Abdul Mageed said he hoped that the summit would conclude with positive news concerning the human crisis in Iraq, and added that Iraq, with its potential capabilities, can play an important role in the region.
