Internet Granny and the Teenage Boy

By Umm Farouq

September 21, 2004

“Granny! Are you very busy right now? I’d like to talk to you.”

“Yes dear. No problem. Certainly – just let me finish this paragraph. Won’t take a second.”

“Granny this is really important, can you hurry up a bit please?”

“I’ll be right with you, dear. Young people have no patience dear!”

“I’m waiting Granny. But I think you’ll be interested in what I have to tell you.”

“I’m always interested dear- by the way did you see that picture I’ve downloaded dear?”

“Granny! I’ve found the love of my life!”

“Oh dear.. Dear me, dear. What was that you said?”

“I know who I want to marry…”

“Yes I heard that part dear. Goodness me, that came as a bit of a surprise! Have you been talking to boys dear?”

“No Granny, “he” talked to me.”

“And where were you when “he” talked to you?”

“I was at school for the interview.”

“I was with you dear – all the time I believe.”

“Yes, you were Granny – until I had to do that test.”

“Ah yes, and you went through to the exam room dear.”

“Yes and that’s when dear, dear Midu-that’s what everyone calls him Granny – came and talked to me.”

“Well, I can think of some other names for him besides “Midu.”

“Granny you look like you don’t like Midu.”

“That’s the understatement of the century dear.”

“Oh Granny, you don’t know him!”

“And neither do you dear.”

“It’s not a matter of well – knowing him- as such – it’s something of a spiritual nature Granny. I doubt that you would understand such things.”

“Spiritual nature huh dear? I’ve heard it being called many things dear, but not that!”

“He said he knew as soon as he saw me that I was the one for him.”

“Really dear? Hmmm”

“And that he knew I had good character and a strong personality. How do you think he knew that about me Granny?”

“A good guess dear.”

“He said he wants to meet me to get to know me more.”

“I bet he does dear.”

“And he said not to tell my mother and …”

“And what did you say dear?”

“I said yes, but of course I knew I’d tell you – so that’s not a lie, is it Granny?”

“That’s the least of your worries dear.”

“I’m not worried Granny – I just want to know how to deal with everything so Midu and I can get married. He says he loves me.”

“So ‘Midu’ met you in a crowded school administration area, talked to you for a few minutes in an exam room and decided he wants to marry you dear. Is that what you’re trying to tell me?”

“Oh Granny! You’re so perceptive.”

“Good gracious me dear, did you believe him?”

“Of course!”

“How old is he?”

“He’s nearly eighteen Granny.”

“Did you meet him dear?”

“No, it’s not right to meet boys Granny, that’s why I’m talking to you. What should I do?”

“Back up a bit dear. You know it’s not right to meet boys but he obviously has no problem with meeting you – don’t you see something wrong there dear?”

“Perhaps he just doesn’t understand the…”

“Obviously dear. You know what I think dear?”

“I have no idea what you’re thinking Granny.”

“But I thought your spiritual awareness radar was in great working order dear.”

“Only when it comes to Midu Granny.”

“Well I’m thinking that you’re in love with the fact that he likes you…”

“Oh Granny! How could you question the sincerity of my feelings?”

“Yep, that’s what I think dear and you know what else? I think he is a fast talking opportunist who sees a young girl and takes his chance to…”

“Granny – you’re breaking my vulnerable young heart. I know he always says what he means and means what he says.”

“What’s his last name dear?”

“Oh I forget to ask him Granny.”

“What’s his line of study? Has he traveled? Who are his friends? What is his family like?”

“I don’t know Granny but if I can meet him I’ll know all that.”

“Perhaps dear but the problem is you made up your mind before you know him dear.”

“I must trust my feelings and follow my heart.”

“Really dear?”

“Yes, it’s all a part of the journey of life. Look Granny, take a look at his photo.”

“By the way dear, is ‘Midu’ that tall chap who was sitting at the desk on the left?”

“Yes Granny – you do remember him!”

“Oh yes I do dear. Actually I was at the school yesterday to pick up some papers and I saw him.”

“I’m sure he was working hard as usual Granny.”

“Oh he was working hard all right! There was a girl about your age and he was sitting with her. They were exchanging phone numbers and googly eyes and all that.”

“Oh Granny really?”

“Yes dear. I saw him with my very own eyes. Where are you going dear?”

“I feel like having a game of darts Granny.”

“Here, take his photo dear – it will help you to aim well.”

“Yeah I’ll put it on the bullseye!”
