Palestine in Mourning

The Assassination - Stances & Vision - Ramifications - Israeli Policies

Sheikh Yassin Statements

On ceasefire:

“We did stop our martyr operations inside Israel for a long time, during which Israeli crimes of assassinations and destruction were never stopped.” May 11, 2002

“We are ready to lay down arms when our homeland and holy places are liberated. Then, the Palestinian state will be established. If it was established after the liberation of the land, there would be no need for arms. We would be the first to lay them down.” May 7, 2003

“We have already declared a truce before. How did the Israelis react? They continued demolishing our homes, detaining, killing and starving us to death… The clear truth now is that Israel is not leaving us any other option but to resist the occupation.” December 9, 2003

On Israeli assassination policy:

“The assassination of Sheikh Salah Shahada only gives a new push to our resistance. Israelis seem to have forgotten history. They killed Yahya Ayyash and a 100 Yahya Ayyash emerged in his stead. They killed Salah Shahada and a hundred others will replace him. If they were to kill Ahmed Yassin, 100 Yassins will stand up to them. They are mistaken if they think assassination could ever kill resistance. It only renders it stronger.” July 25, 2002

On the Palestinian United Leadership document:

“We seek nothing but a political and practical program that brings together various resistance movements and unites them for the benefit of the Palestinian people.” August 19, 2002

On Overall Truce:

“We are not a frozen movement. There is change in political attitudes, but beliefs are rather fixed.” June 16, 2003

On earlier attempt at his life:

“We do not fear the threat of death. We will not bow to pressure and resistance will continue until the occupation is ended.” January 17, 2004
