Low Turnout in Egypt Polls
Turnout has been very low in Egypt's local council elections on Tuesday, April 8, 2008, as the main opposition group, the Muslim Brotherhood, urged its followers to boycott the election when its candidates were disqualified. Most polling stations in Cairo appeared to be almost empty. The election was taking place after two days of riots over food prices and low wages in the Nile Delta town of Mahallah, where a teenage boy was shot by police on Sunday. He later died of his wounds.
