Darfur Hit by Meningitis Outbreak - UN
The United Nations declared a meningitis outbreak in Sudan's troubled Darfur area, UN spokeswoman Radhia Achouri told reporters in Khartoum on Wednesday, March 23, 2005. The potentially fatal disease threatens crowded camps where it can spread uncontrollably. A total of 27 suspected cases and two deaths from meningitis have been reported in North Darfur state. Four cases of bacterial meningitis had been identified in one of the havens for some of the almost 2 million refugees to have fled two years of fighting.
