Three killed as National Strike Hits Togo
Three people were killed by government security forces during a strike in Togo’s capital Lome, Monday, February 14, 2005, to protest the presidency of Faure Gnassingbe, who came to power with the help of the military. Businesses shut down in response to the strike call and the tension that has been growing since President Gnassingbe Eyadema died of a heart attack on February 5 after 38 years of oppressive rule. His son has defied international and domestic calls to step down.
