Israel Detains Palestinian Election Candidate
Mustafa Barghouti, a candidate for next month’s Palestinian presidential election, was detained Monday, December 27, 2004, by Israeli police while campaigning in east Jerusalem. Barghouti was led away to the central police station after being arrested while protesting in Jerusalem's Old City at the building site of a controversial separation barrier in the West Bank town of Bel'eem. Barghouti is running second to election frontrunner Mahmoud Abbas.
