Kurds Demonstrate for More Rights in Turkey
About 50,000 Kurds gathered in peaceful demonstration Sunday, December 12, 2004, in Diyarbakir, the heart of Turkey’s Kurdish southeast, to support Turkey’s EU membership, demanding freedoms. Around 100 people clashed with police when they were stopped from holding a separate march after the rally ended. Five officers and several protestors were injured towards the rally's end when a group of protestors, barred from holding a separate march, pelted the security forces with stones and sticks.
