About 160,000 Flee Second Storm in Philippines
More than 160,000 people fled to high ground or crowded into schools and town halls Saturday, December 4, 2004, as another powerful typhoon battered the eastern Philippines, where 1,000 are feared dead or missing from an earlier storm. Mudslides and flash floods have turned entire provinces facing the Pacific Ocean into a sea of mud littered with bodies, uprooted trees, collapsed homes and bridges. Schools and government offices were to remain closed Sunday across the country.
