Religious Dispute Erupts in Liberia
Liberia's President Gyude Bryant imposed an immediate curfew in the capital Monrovia after heavy fighting spread through the city overnight, Saturday, October 30, 2004, leaving five dead and numerous people injured. A religious dispute on Thursday evening mushroomed into riots, destroying mosques, Churches, and religious schools. Rioters also upended and torched cars and damaged several houses. There are some 15,000 UN peacekeepers struggling to restore calm in Liberia and they are due to finish disarming the estimated 40,000 former militiamen by the end of October.
