Ukraine: Opposition Rally Draws Hundreds of Thousands
Waving orange flags, up to 100,000 backers of opposition presidential candidate Viktor Yushchenko took to the streets of Kiev in front of the offices of the central electoral commission, Saturday, October 23, 2004. Eight days before the poll, protestors are demanding a free and fair presidential election on Oct. 31. The rally coincided with a refusal by outgoing President Viktor Kuchma to provide more opportunities for expatriate Ukrainians, estimated to number between three and four million, to cast their ballots.
