Haitian Death Toll from Jeanne Rises to 1,316
The official death toll in Haiti from flooding caused by tropical storm Jeanne has risen to at least 1,316, while 1,097 people are still missing and 3,000 are listed as injured, Dieufort Delorge, a civil defense spokesman, said Sunday, September 26, 2004. He added that there is no longer any hope that the missing will be found alive. Most of the dead were in Gonaives, where thousands of homes were destroyed and about a quarter of a million people are estimated to be homeless. (AFP)
