Rebels Kill Eight Outside Darfur
Rebels from Sudan's western Darfur region attacked Ghibaish town in West Kordofan state in the center of the country, killing eight civilians, in what was their first foray outside their own territory, the interior ministry announced Thursday, September 23, 2004. Sudanese government continues expanding safe areas under its control in Darfur under the UN agreement to protect civilians. Local residents fought with government soldiers against rebels leaving eight fighters from the combined force dead.
