Turkish Women Protest Adultery Criminalization
Hundreds of Turkish women marched on parliament in Ankara, Tuesday, September 14, 2004, to protest against the government’s attempts to make adultery a criminal offense. Under the proposed legislation, men and women could face up to two years in prison if convicted. Turkey dropped its plan to criminalize adultery later on Tuesday after several foreign ministers from the European Union had warned that if the law is passed, it could affect Turkey’s hopes of being accepted into the European Union. |
