Bush could have been targeted by Cloutier
|
WASHINGTON,
Sept 5 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) - A 33-year-old man was
arrested Wednesday, September 4, 2002, in possession of an array of
shotguns and other weapons. The arrest came after law enforcement
agencies earlier in the day put out an alert he may have been seeking
to target U.S. President George W. Bush.
Jeffrey Cloutier, a resident of Newport, New Hampshire, is expected to
appear Thursday, September 05, 2002, in federal district court in
Washington on firearms violations charges, a law enforcement source
told Agence France-Presse (AFP).
Cloutier arrived in the U.S. capital after renting a car at
Philadelphia International Airport early Wednesday.
He was arrested in the afternoon less than three kilometers (two
miles) away from the White House, in possession of a total of 16
weapons, including six handguns, shotguns and rifles, the source said.
"He was the subject of an earlier secret service alert put out to
law enforcement agencies," the source said, without giving
details as to where the weapons had come from.
CNN television reported that Cloutier was detained, along with a woman
in the rental car, a Chevrolet Cavalier.
Police in Newport issued the alert late Tuesday, after Cloutier was
heard making comments about needing to go to Washington to "get
things straightened out," according to CNN.
