Reshaping Iraq

Iraq: In Retrospect

As the first year of the US’ occupation of Iraq draws to a bloody close, many will pause to take stock of how life has changed for the Iraqis since the Coalition’s armies invaded in March 2003.

Promised freedom, prosperity and a speedy return to normalcy, what has the Coalition in fact given the Iraqi people? How much of a discrepancy is there between Bush’s promises and the actual situation on the ground? Has the removal of one of the Arab world’s worst dictators by foreign military intervention ushered in the much-touted era of freedom for Iraq and security for the region? Can the wounds left by so much violence and bloodshed ever be healed completely?

To mark the first anniversary of the fall of Baghdad, IslamOnline has prepared this special page, exploring many of the complexities surrounding the volatile and still-unfolding situation in Iraq today. The page also offers a selection of articles from our coverage of the past year, allowing readers a more in-depth perspective on today’s Iraq.

We’ll also be hosting a number of live dialogues on various issues on Iraq throughout the week; be sure to follow our regular updates for scheduling information.
