On
Tuesday, October 7, Turkey’s parliament voted overwhelmingly
in favor of sending Turkish troops to Iraq, despite strong
public opposition at home and from members of the Iraqi
Governing Council. The following two articles present two
different viewpoints – one by Firas Al-Atraqchi, a Canadian
writer of Iraqi heritage, the other by Turkish Daily News writer
Ilnur Cevik – on the deployment of Turkish troops in Iraq.
It
is no surprise at all that the Iraqi people, comprised of Arabs,
Kurds, Assyrians, Yazidis, Catholics, Shiites, Sunnis and
others, firmly reject the notion of Turkey sending 10,000 troops
to help the US and UK govern Iraq.
The
Turkish government sees that deploying our troops in Iraq will
serve the vital interests of Turkey, and they consider it
essential for our forces to be deployed in the neighboring
country in the not too distant future.
