Facts About Bechtel

What is Bechtel Corporation?

  • It is the largest engineering construction company in the US .

  • It develops, constructs and operates telecommunication projects, construction management software, water systems, petroleum and chemical plants, pipelines, nuclear power plants, mining and metal projects and civil infrastructure projects.

  • Stephen Bechtel and Steve McCone increased Bechtel’s fortune by building warships for the US military in WWII.

  • Bechtel has developed, built and operated a chemical weapons destruction program in cooperation with the US Army.

  • Bechtel has played a role in building half the nuclear power plants in the world and was hired by former President Reagan to build major nuclear plants. It also built some of the laboratories for the Manhattan Project – where the atom bomb was engineered. The Manhattan Project is the largest developer and producer of nuclear arsenal in the world.

  • Bechtel built the first major pipelines in Alaska and Saudi Arabia .

  • Bechtel built Jubail, a massive industrial city in  Saudi Arabia  

  • Whilst building pipelines in Saudi Arabia , the US Office of Strategic Services used Bechtel as a cover to monitor events in the Middle East.

  • Bechtel built Da Nang , the US Air-Force base in South Vietnam .

  • Bechtel was awarded $4.3mn by USAID to help developing countries like Morocco , Bangladesh , Costa Rica and Jamaica to develop fossil fuel resources.

  • Bechtel manages the operation of defense related nuclear tests at the Nevada Test Site

  • Bechtel is building the Maghreb Europe gas pipeline starting from Hassir’Mel, Algeria to Cordoba , Spain via Morocco and the Straits of Gibraltar.

  • Bechtel donates generously to the US Republican Party. In the April 2000 elections, Bechtel gave a $100,000 check to the Republican National Committee, and again in October, it gave another $100,000 to the same committee.

  • The US Export-Import Bank approved financial guarantees for Bechtel to provide $250mn for construction and management services to build a 72-mile highway from Croatia , via Zagreb , to Bosnia-Herzegovina.

  • Former head of Export-Import Bank, Henry Kearns, assisted Bechtel by establishing funds for the Freeport gold mine in New Guinea

  • Collaboration between Bechtel and CIA was instrumental in the toppling of Iran ’s President.

  • As a family-owned private company, under US law, Bechtel is not required to disclose its earnings.

  • The Bechtel Group is in its 4th generation of family leadership, with the controlling stake held by Riley Bechtel. The company is one of the top 200 largest family-owned companies in the world.
