Iraqi National Congress

20/5/2003

The Iraqi National Congress (INC) is a secular Iraqi opposition group that is based in London and backed and funded by the US. It is led by Ahmed Chalabi, who is expected to play a key role in the post-Saddam regime in Iraq.

The INC was founded in 1992 to comprise Kurdish and Shia Iraqi opposition members. In 1995, an attempt by the INC to organize an uprising against Saddam’s regime failed and many lives were lost.

The Iraq Liberation Act, which was passed by the US Congress in 1998, granted the INC a sum of $97 million.
