HUMAN
CARE FOUNDATION COUNSELLING TEAM
Many
innocent families lost basically everything they owned under the sun. Children
lost their parents; wives lost their husbands; families lost their livelihood.
More than one million got displaced, reduced to a few refugee camps.
In
refugee camps, traumatized tsunami victims desperately need help, kind words,
and physical & mental health care.
Human
Care Foundation has sent a 30 member counselors’ team to Ampara District to
provide counseling to the victims and also to train volunteers on post tsunami
counseling.
The
team led by Dr.Sherief consisted of 3 senior lecturers from Medical
College, Colombo, and 15 medical students of the same. Prior to their departure,
the team underwent special training in post tsunami trauma counseling.
Prior
to commencing the counseling program, the team conducted a training program for
12 volunteers who consequently joined the counseling team in
visiting
camps and houses. The counselors formed themselves into 4 teams and visited
camps listening to the innocent ladies and girls and giving them counseling. The
counselors also made house-to-house visits.
