Diet
and exercise. Two key words told so often to people who want to lose weight. But
in reality, and according to the World Health Organization (WHO), diet and
exercise is for everyone, whether to lose weight or just to stay fit and
healthy. Current statistics have it that 2 million people worldwide die of
inactivity annually. In addition to inactivity, inadequate diets have lead to
the increase of chronic diseases.
According
to the WHO, there has been a significant change in dietary habits and physical
activity around the globe as a result of industrialization, urbanization,
economic development, and an increasing globalization of the food market. Most
of the world’s disease burden is due to largely preventable risk factors.
This
encouraged the WHO to embark on a campaign to increase awareness and
understanding of these problems. The World Health Assembly endorsed the Global
Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity, and Health on May 2004.
The
Strategy’s focus is on preventing chronic diseases such as cardiovascular
diseases, diabetes, as well as cancer and obesity. It shows that many of these
problems could be overcome by increasing our fruit and vegetable intake as well
as getting enough exercise.

out more on how the WHO is promoting fruit and vegetable consumption around the
globe in an international effort to curb the increase of preventable diseases.
WHO also addresses the dire need for at least 30 minutes of moderate physical
activity daily.
