The Hidden Crimes of Tobacco

Many measures have been taken to protect non smokers from second hand tobacco, everyday we here about legislations, public campaigns, etc.

But don't you think, non smokers should be more positive and protect themselves, rather than waiting for others to protect them?

If you are a non smoker, do you have this courage to tell anyone who dare to smoke beside you, please put off your cigarette, I want to breathe?!

Well actually numerous times.

Sadly, it's only in the Muslim world that I ever have to do that. It never goes without some sort of negative reaction. If the person is courteous they will usually give me a look then **** out. Most of the time however, I can expect some sort of insult or complete disregard. A few times I was told that if I didn't like it I can go outside, he was too cold and he was free to smoke if he wanted to... and he was actually sitting directly underneath the no smoking sign! Then there are the taxi drivers with their "it's my car, I can smoke if I like". You try asking a taxi to drop you off in the middle of a freeway cause you don't like the fact that he's depriving you of the ability to breathe.

Oh and how could I forget about the smoking dervishes. This was actually a suffi zawyah I visited once. It seemed a prerequisite of membership was being a chain smoker.

I am now resolved to carrying a wet wipe with me whenever I travel in a Muslim country. It's not perfect, but it does postpone my coughing fits a little bit.

I never have to do that in the west. They have laws to protect people from murderers (aka smokers).

Most of the time, I feel embarassed when I ask others not to smoke, specially people who I don't know.

As a result, sometimes I simply shut up.

I know that I'm not doing the right thing, but I can not help it.

Where you live, makes all the difference.

Livingin a developping country means you are in trouble if you tell someone to stop smoking beside you specially, if he was a taxi driver or a tecnician or an employee in a public place.

Even if we face some difficulties with people who are extremely negative damaging their health and also others', we shouldn't give up.

We should be more assertive, this is our only way to protect ourselves, our gov. will do nothing as we all know.

So keep going.

I think the issue of passive smoking can be taken a bit far.

True, there are some health risks in tobacco. My grandfather was a smoker and he died in his mid-forties. However, lots of things are risky. Driving a car is risky.

Eating kebabs or hamburgers may be bad for your health. So does this mean if someone is driving a car we should tell him to stop because he might endanger a pedestrian's life? How many people are killed in road traffic accidents every year?

If Muslims want to smoke and it is not forbidden then what is the problem?
As far as i know smoking is only forbidden for Muslims if it poses a threat to their life. So in my grandfather's case (whose lungs were damaged and) the doctor told him to stop. For him Islam forbids smoking.

But for a 20 year old man who is fit and occasionally like to smoke a cigarette with friends or has a sheesha at a restaurant: What's the problem?

He will probably breathe as many cancer causing substances from the traffic on the street as the cigarette.

----------------------------------------

Having sad this i have a friend who works in a place where people smoke. He would like to work in a smoke free place. So perhaps in the workplace smoking should be banned. But banning it in people's private cars or homes? I think that would be a bit too much.
