Sports and the Lives of Youth

Dear brothers and sisters, as-salamu `Alaykum. As you know the World Cup tournament is approaching. No doubt that it draws the attention of and greatly affects the lives of the young Muslims and non-Muslims. Now, let's discuss the following: 1. Do sports positively affect the lives of the youth? 2. Should governments encourage youth to be interested in sports? 3. Should the youth spend much of their time in playing and watching sports?
Wassalamu alaykum wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatu.

Sports Should Be Really for All!

I think governments should more encourage youth to practice sports instead of encouraging them to watch. Governments should build recreation centers and playgrounds, and encourage people to practice sports, rather than spending much money on matches and celebrations. It should be crystal clear that sports is not restricted to a few number of people while others are only watching. Sports should be really for all.

I totally agree with you. It's silly to see all those fans who know each and every detail of their player's life, but they do not care about practicing or having a fit body. What kind of interest in sports is this

I think the youth can sieze the opportunity of the coming World Cup and launch a know-Islam campaign. They can print out leaflets about Islam and its teachings.

Salams all, i think playing sport is something that many Muslims, young and old, overlook. Many Muslims think it is being 'righteous' to stay at home and not get involved in life, which includes playing sport, meeting people and interacting. This kind of behavior leads to misunderstanding from non-Muslims who don't get a chance to know us if we isolate ourselves. So in the summer the young people in Islamic centers can take the chance to arrange games and sporting events that are designed and planned according to Islam and then have a great time, get fit, meet people, and do good deeds!

Salaam Alaikum. Unfortunately, most Muslim communities do not realise the importance of playing sport, and invest very little time in it. I think that playing sport is paramount to the mental and physical development of a person, particularly youth. The youth are bombarded with negative influences in many spheres of their lives. Playing sport is a good way to divert their attention from these negative influences, while at the same time keeping them healthy and fit. It's also a good way for the youth to vent their frustration and get rid of stress.

Peace upon you all. Many modern studies proved that sports, through physical exercise, can improve posture, physical fitness and health. Also, sports can prevent certain diseases such as obesity, heart disease, etc. From an Islamic perspective, physical fitness and physical strength are qualities which need to be developed, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "The strong believer is better than the weak one." Thus, I believe that the Muslim youth should practice sports because of their great importance. However, they should not spend much of their time in playing; as the Muslim have more important things to do.

1-Sports will postively affect the lives of the youth when it only encourgaes them to be active praticioners of various kinds of exercise. As long as the youth play the role of passive watchers, they will not benefit from the plethora of sport events and TV programs 2-Governments should encourgae youth to practice sports by facilitating the construction of game fields, swimming pools, gymnasiums ....etc However, some governments try to use interests in sports as opium when they try to spread the culture of passive watching and engaging in polemics of who won what. This should be definitely shunned. Active and genuine interest in sports is when the youth are keen to exercise and have fit bodies. 3-The ideal thing is to spend more time playing than watching. But if watching is regarded ocasionally as partly -and not totally- a social ocassion then it is Ok to watch. However, young people have to beware not to become too excited and zealot when they support their teams

I think that sports is very important. In my society children have sports classes in school from year 1 and many are organised in sports clubs after school and play soccer, tennis, volleyball etc. I have read articles in the past saying that especially young women and girls in many Muslim countries do not practice enough sports. They sit around too much and don't have the chance (? permission?, possibility?) to regularly practice sports. Is that true?

Waaleikum salam, There is nothing wrong with sports infact this is healthy and makes our body to grow strong and healthy. We can make our children do any kinda sport so that they grow to be healthy but like one of our brothers said that we shouldnt concentrate alot on it e.g knowing the background of a player while u dont know urs at all.People could know the whole history of Ronaldo but if you just ask him about his own history he doesnt know at all. And for women I suggest the exercise could be done indoors as you know whenever a women jumps or run her body will show people things which are not to be seen and will bring fitna. So there are alot of gym and pools whereby it could be done indoors and without problems. People should exercise daily and make there body fit. Jazakallah kheir
