NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec. 26 — Islamist forces in Somalia beat a hasty retreat today to their stronghold in Mogadishu, Somalia’s battle-scared capital, crumbling faster than anyone expected after a week of attacks by Ethiopian forces.

Burhakaba, a large inland city, fell first, followed by Dinsoor, not far away, and then Bulo Burto, where just a few weeks ago the Islamists in charge were threatening to behead people who did not pray.

The Islamist fighters, who had seemed invincible after taking Mogadishu in June, now seem powerless to stop the steady advance of the Ethiopian-backed forces of the transitional government.

By this afternoon, the transitional government troops were within 60 miles of Mogadishu and calling for the Islamists to surrender. The Islamist leaders refused, saying they would take their fight “everywhere,” which some people viewed as a veiled threat to expand the guerilla tactics and suicide bombs they have already used.

They seem invincible when they are raping the defenceless women after killing their unarmed husbands. But even such a weak and not too well armed army as the Ethiopian converts them in the world champions in running.

I am surprised we haven't heard any whining from the Islamist amen corner all over the world about the violation of Somali sovereignty, and the "atrocities" committed by the Ethiopians, in short all of the propaganda drivel that worked so well for the Bosnians & Kosovo Albanians in mobilizing useful ****** to their side in the West.

Hopefully our pea-brains in the State Department have learnt their lesson and finally realized that we’re up against a well-financed and organized worldwide Islamist conspiracy. The so-called “clash of civilizations” has been going on at least since 1979 and in order to defeat the forces of evil, we must first of all acknowledge that there’s a war out there instead of pontificating about the religion of peace.

After al-Qaeda lost its bases in Afghanistan, they’ve been looking for new country to take over (clearly Pakistan isn't enough), and Somalia is ripe for taking. If we don’t support the current Somali government (as bad and corrupt as it is) reeling under the Islamist assault, we may have only ourselves to blame later.

And i am not surprised at all. These tricks work only with democratic countries, who value human life.Ethiopia, with all my due respect, will simply spit on this pseudo-moralistic screams.

You’re right, the Ethiopians couldn’t care less; the Islamist propaganda is directed at the useful ****** & bleeding hearts in the West. Their amen corner are people like Karen Armstrong who sees no evil hears no evil and John Esposito telling everybody in sight that the Islamists are actually “democrats in disguise”. The same John Esposito, who got rich on Saudi commissions, told us that there absolutely no threat to the USA from the UBL and his ilk; he did it a couple of weeks before 9/11.

The useful ****** is not a bad thing  to have in the society;they stop the society from swaying to another extremity, where a  life of the enemy is worth nothing, like it was in the Soviet Union or Hitler´s Germany,or Iraq,Iran, and other "islamic democracies".

But the number of ****** in the society must be regulated. If they exceed some critical limit, the normal people must be given licencies to hunt them. It´s a joke,of course, but when there are too many useful ****** in the society, this society becomes quite idiotic. This is what i see in Western Europe, and to my deep regret,in Israel and America, although to a somewhat less degree.

Looks like the USA has learnt its lesson.

The African Union has backed Ethiopia's right to intervene. Diplomats say that, allied to Washington's tacit support, may embolden Meles to try to seize Mogadishu.

But SICC spokesman Abdi Kafi said any attempt by Ethiopia to take Mogadishu "will be their destruction and doomsday."

The diplomats said the fighting could now draw in Eritrea. They added that Kenya, which is taking in Somali refugees across its north border, was trying to broker ceasefire talks.

Meles said his forces' main target now were Eritrean troops and foreign jihadists. He said a handful of Islamist prisoners taken on the battlefield were holding British passports.

U.N. special envoy Francois Lonseny Fall urged the Security Council to call for an immediate halt to the fighting or risk a broader conflict in the already chaotic region.

State Department spokesman Gonzo Gallegos told a briefing in Washington: "Ethiopia has genuine security concerns with regard to developments within Somalia and has provided support at the request of the legitimate governing authority."

He said Washington had urged it to exercise "maximum restraint."

Inshallah. It´s quite about time.Even such a country as USA can not bear the burden of so many political and economic errors.

Ethiopia will,of course, crash the islamic militia of Somali without any problem. But continuing(or better let´s say restarting) the old conflict with Eritrea is a mistake which may cost Ethiopia dear.

By MARK MAZZETTI

WASHINGTON, Dec. 26 — The United States on Tuesday signaled its support for the Ethiopian offensive in Somalia, calling it a response to “aggression” by Islamists who have since the summer been consolidating power in the country.

A spokeswoman for the State Department, Janelle Hironimus, said Ethiopia was trying to stem the flow of outside arms shipments to the Islamists. Ms. Hironimus added that Washington was concerned about reports that the Islamists were using child soldiers and abusing Ethiopian prisoners of war.

The statement was the most detailed by the United States since last week, when the long-simmering tension between Ethiopia and Somalia boiled over.

Ethiopia has long been a strong ally of Washington in the Horn of Africa. The American military has for years trained Ethiopian troops at bases in the eastern region. The training is part of a Pentagon effort to build the Ethiopian military into a bulwark against regional terrorist networks.

The Ethiopians are acting in their own national interests, and so are we. As an aside, it looks like the Byzantines & Persians made a big mistake in the 7th century: they should've asked for "help" from the Abyssinians.
