Ramadan in Your Country
Posted: Sep 21, 2006 8:52 AM

As-salamu alaikom dear brothers and sisters. Ramadan Kareem. I wrote the following topic years before, and it got useful replies. I think it will be a good idea to revive it. Ramadan is a distinguished month in the Muslim world- and may be in most of the world- due to its spiritual values and traditions. In my country, Egypt, we spend this month attending special night prayers “Qiyam prayers” , attending religious lessons, making charity, decorating streets , kids playing with a special Lanterns called “Fanous” , singing special Ramadan anasheed “songs”, specific men walking in the streets in the mid night calling people to wake up and have “Sohour” meal before AlFajr prayer, members of the family have meals together and talk happily or watch Ramadan special programs.

That’s Ramadan in my country; what about it in yours or in countries you visited or read about?

assalamu alaykum ya habeebi

We also spend Ramadan much the same way except for the Lanterns. And we call the Ramadan Qiyam prayers as "Taraweeh". During the whole month of Ramadan, in the Taraweeh, the Quran is recited, completing the recitation of the whole of the Quran during the month. Most people read the Quran, and the translation of its meanings, and Tafsir on their own as well, but some go to study circles, too.
