Salam, everyone…

The countdown to Ramadan has started, hope everyone is ready and have set their agenda for Ramadan.

An important point that should be put in mind is how are you going to deal with family, friends, co- workers...even the bus driver in Ramadan, especially if you are a new Muslim and the people around you just can't get the idea of why are you doing that to yourself, abstaining from food and drink for almost 12 hours, they sure think you are totally out of your mind!

Maybe you will find it hard to always wear a smile when you are suffering from lack of food and drink, but remember don't defeat the purpose of your fasting by losing your temper and pouring your anger on others. Patience is the corner stone of fasting and one of its main objectives.

So if you have any tips or advices that you would like to share with others about the way to deal with non Muslim families and friends in Ramadan, please go ahead.

Patience … Patience … Patience

As you said Neveen, fasting teaches patience. It is all about endurance and self-restraint. One has to keep in mind that Ramadan to non-Muslims is something to torture them by abstaining from food and drink and illicit actions form dawn to sunset. To many of them, Muslims do not eat rod rink for thirty days. From a personal experience, when I was in the Netherlands I got to know an Australian guy who stayed in the same corridor where I stayed in the student house.  He used to say to me "enjoy your fasting". When I started to talk to him, to my surprise, he said why you do not eat and drink for a whole month. At this point, I understood why he used to say "enjoy your fasting". I explained to him the whole idea of fasting and he started to respect the idea of fasting.

I am telling this story to make it clear that non-Muslims need to hear from Muslims themselves what Ramadan is about.

Through one's patience with other when dealing with them, one can convey the message of fasting. One should keep his temper whatever bad comments he hears form his colleagues or co-workers.
