Pakistani Lovers To Be Flogged For Adultery In Emirates

DUBAI, June 4 (AFP)-An Emirati court has sentenced two Pakistanis found guilty of adultery to a combined 240 lashes and up to one year in prison, newspapers reported Sunday.

Jamilah Rasul, a married Muslim woman, was sentenced by an Islamic court in Ras al-Khaimah, in the north of the United Arab Emirates, to 150 lashes and one year in jail, Al-Khaleej said.

Her adulterous partner, Mohammad Ishaar, who is also married, will receive 90 lashes and serve a three-month jail term followed by deportation, the paper said.

Islamic Sharia courts throughout the seven emirates that make up the UAE hand down severe punishments that usually include the lash, a jail term and deportation for men and women who have affairs.

In April, an Emirati court commuted the sentence of an Indonesian maid who was condemned to death by stoning for adultery, and instead ordered her to serve a one-year jail term to be followed by deportation.

Asians account for 40 percent of the total population of some 2.8 million and more than half the 800,000-strong workforce of the oil-rich Emirates.
