Saudi Rapist Executed, Two Thieves Amputated

RIYADH, June 4 (AFP)-A convicted rapist was beheaded Sunday and two foreigners had their right hands amputated for pick pocketing, in accordance with the Islamic laws in Saudi Arabia, the Interior Ministry said.

It said Said bin Salem bin Said, a Saudi, was condemned to death for kidnapping a young girl and repeatedly raping her, as well as for several thefts and for taking drugs and drinking alcohol.

The execution took place in the Muslim holy city of Mecca, bringing to at least 47 the number of beheadings announced in the kingdom this year.

An Afghan, Mohammad Hussein, and Sansui Saneh Mohammad from Nigeria, both convicted of pick pocketing, had their right hands chopped off in the Grand Mosque complex of Mecca, the ministry said, quoted by the official news agency SPA.

Saudi Arabia applies Sharia law, which calls for the right hands of thieves to be amputated. If the amputee steals again, the left hand is also amputated.

The religiously Islamic conservative Gulf state also applies the death penalty on people found guilty of murder, rape, apostasy, armed robbery, and drug trafficking and repeated drug offenses.

Riyadh has dismissed a string of critical reports by the London-based human rights organization Amnesty International pointing to alleged abuses and defects in the criminal justice system. The kingdom insists Islamic law is the best guarantor of human rights.
