At Least 51 Killed As Massive Earthquake Hits Indonesia

JAKARTA, June 5 (AFP) - A massive earthquake measuring up to 7.9 on the Richter scale and several powerful aftershocks, hit the Indonesian island of Sumatra, killing at least 51 people and injuring hundreds, reports said Monday.

The state Antara news agency said three hospitals in the worst hit city of Bengkulu had reported 40 dead and "hundreds" injured, while the Detikom online service reported 11 killed in outlying districts.

Police said their known toll stood at 14.

"The latest report we have showed that 14 people were killed in the city of Bengkulu and its immediate surroundings," Captain Awaludin from the Bengkulu province military headquarters told AFP by telephone.

Detikcom quoted a local journalist as saying that seven people were killed in Sukaraja sub-district, three in South and North Bengkulu districts, and one in the town of Mana, in addition to those killed in the city.

The initial shock, measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale hit around 11:27 p.m. (1627 GMT) Sunday, and was followed by a strong aftershock measuring 6.7, the United States Geological Survey said.

According to witnesses, the first quake lasted several minutes, cracking many buildings, and toppling several.

The national meteorology office in Jakarta put the size of the initial trembler at 7.3 on the Richter scale and said it was centered in the Indian Ocean some 100 kilometers (62 miles) southwest of Bengkulu.
