The
Papali & Wooden Musical Instruments in Liberia
The
total number of population in Liberia is 4 millions of which 15%
are Muslims. During the month of Ramadan, all Muslims in Liberia
stop listening to music. Muslims consider the one who listens to
music during Ramadan as a sinner who deviates the true spirit of
this blessed month.
When
sighting the new moon of Ramadan is announced, the Liberians start
playing some wooden musical instruments for some hours. Also,
local radio stations specify certain hours for religious programs
that are beneficial to Muslims on daily basis.
In
Liberia, the person who usually awakes people to eat Suhoor (i.e.
pre-dawn meal during Ramadan nights) is known as Papali. The
Papali starts his job three hours before dawn and stops for a
while by every house calling its inhabitants to get up to have
their Suhoor. This process is usually accompanied by singing some
local religious songs and reiterating the Shahadah (i.e. there is
no God but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah).
