Ramadan in History

On the second day of Ramadan, 732 A.H. Ibn Khuldun was born in Tunisia. His full name is `Abdur Rahman Ibn Muhammad Ibn Khuldun.

During his early years, Ibn Khuldun studied Arabic, arts and philosophy. Later, he was appointed as the great judge in Fas. Then, he traveled through the Muslim world countries; he visited North Africa, Andalusia (now Spain), the Levant, Granada, Alexandria and Cairo.

In Egypt, he taught in Al-Azhar Ash-Sharif mosque as he proved himself to be one of the most prominent scholars of Islam at that time. He was appointed as the grand judge of Egypt by Sultan Barquq in 801 A.H. He participated in the campaign of Sultan An-Nasir in the Levant in their war against Tamburlaine.

Ibn Khuldun gained extensive and vast experience in almost all fields of knowledge the matter which was excellently shown in his great book Muqaddimah. This precious and voluminous work covered a wide area of various fields such as sociology, economy, politics, philosophy and history. It was translated into many European languages. Therefore, Ibn Khuldun is considered to be the founder of modern sociology.

He died in 808 A.H. in Egypt during the reign of Sultan An-Nasir Li-Din Allah.
