`Abdul Malik Ibn Marwan is a famous
Umayyad Caliph. He assumed caliphate on 26th of
Ramadan, 65 A.H. He grew up in Madinah and learnt Islamic sciences
on the hands of Madinan scholars, until he became one of the four
jurists of Madinah at that time. He managed to put an end to the
chaos that prevailed in the Muslim community when he came to
power. Ibn Khuldun states: “`Abdul Malik Ibn
Marwan is one of the greatest Arab and Muslim Caliphs. He followed
in the footsteps of `Umar Ibn Al-Khattab, the Commander of the Believers, in
regulating state affairs.” In his reign, all important records were
translated into Arabic, and special currency for the Muslim world
was minted for the first time. That currency was made the only
exchange in the Muslim world. Also, many reforms happened in his
time as regards agriculture and commerce. `Umar Ibn `Abdul `Aziz regarded his uncle,
`Abdul Malik Ibn Marwan, as a good example of Muslim Caliph. Nafi` described him saying: “I never saw
a young man in Madinah more active, knowledgeable, worshipper and
good reciter of the Qur’an than `Abdul Malik Ibn Marwan.” When
`Abdullah Ibn `Amr was asked whom should people consult after the
demise of `Abdullah and his fellows, he answered: “Marwan has a
well learned son, you may consult him.” Here we present a hint about that great Caliph to Arab and Muslim readers to make use of it in their life.
