The Conquest of
Nubia .. a Peace Treaty
After
the conquest of Egypt Amr bin El-`Aas sent an expedition under the
leadership of `Uqba Ibn Nafi’ and there Muslims fought very
courageously against the Nubians who showed a strong resistance,
for they had great marksmanship and managed to hurt a great number
of the Companions and pocked out the eyes of many of them, and
that's why they were called "eyes scoopers" . This battle
however resulted in an agreement between both sides and a truce
that lasted until the reign of `Othman bin `Affan, when Abdullah
bin Abi as-Sarh became the ruler of Egypt.
The
Nubians then broke the agreement and attacked Upper Egypt and
started destroying everything they could reach, so Abdullah bin Abi
As-Sarh went to stop them in an army of 20,000 fighters and chased
them to the south until he reached their capital Dongle and
besieged it firmly shooting them with the mangonels and preventing
them from going anywhere. Losing control, the Nubians surrendered;
King Kulaydour of the Nubians then asked for a new treaty, begging
Abdullah to show them mercy; then a new treaty was signed.
This treaty however, unlike the first one, had great effects and
helped the spread of Islam in eastern Africa. All this took place
in Ramadan 31 A.H.
