The Conquest of Al-Andalusia
in Ramadan
The
first attempt of entering Al-Andalusia (now Spain)
was made by Tarif
Al-Barbari, the follower of Conqueror, Musa Ibn Nusair, in the
month of Ramadan 91 A.H. as Caliph Al-Walid Ibn Malik agreed to the
latter’s suggestion to conquer Al-Andalusia and spread Islam
there; indeed Tarif returned back from this noble attempt with
great success.
Later,
the Caliph sent Tariq Ibn Ziyad to cross the sea and settle at what
is now known as Gibraltar (Mount of Tariq) That happened in the
month of Sha`ban, 92 A.H. On reaching Andalusia, Tariq ordered to
burn all the ships so that his soldiers would not try or even think
to retreat and return home. Then he delivered his famous preach
where he assured them of the great reward awaiting them. In twenty
eighth of Ramadan, 92a A.H, they defeated the occupiers of
Al-Andalusia, King Qout and his army, and he achieved great
success; this is followed by the huge victories achieved by Musa
Ibn Nusair also in the month of Ramadan the following year, 93A.H.
Thus,
the great month of Ramadan witnessed a series of victories for
three consecutive years on the hand of those great leaders: Tarif
Al-Barbari, Tariq Ibn Ziyad and Musa Ibn Nusair who strove hard to
spread Islam on the land of Andalusia, the lost paradise. Yes,
it’s a treasure which Muslims lost due to lacking elevated values
of unity, and brotherhood. Isn’t it the right time for Muslims to
unite, to return back to the path of Allah? To respond to the call
of their faith and dignity and liberate their lands?
