The Month of the Qur’an

By Sheikh Nitham Yaakoobi

Ramadan is the month of the Qur’an. The Qur’an was revealed in the month of Ramadan. The Prophet (SAAWS) used to review all verses revealed to him with the archangel Gabriel every Ramadan. In the last year of his life he reviewed it twice. The best act of worship in Ramadan after the obligatory prayers is recitation of the Qur’an.

Imam Shafi'i used to recite 60 Khatmahs (i.e. full recitations from cover to cover) during Ramadan. That to me seems a lot for our standards today but we have to understand his noble degree and relationship with Allah. We must make a commitment to at least finish one whole recitation (Khatmah) during this month, and the more the better. Some scholars like Imam Malik used to abstain from teaching any other subject in this month and to confine their full time and teaching for the Qur’an. I pray that we all benefit from this month to be closer to the Qur’an in all ways: reciting, learning, teaching, understanding, implementing and propagating. Ameen!
