 A Joint Position Statement of the US National Muslim Organizations Concerning the Palestinian Plight and the US Foreign Policy
For the past few months, Muslims in the United States and around the world, like all people of conscience, have watched with outrage, the wanton killing of innocent Palestinian children, the Israeli military and economic siege of the occupied territories, in addition to the abuse of the American-made Helicopter Gun-Ships, rockets and tanks to attack civilians and to destroy Palestinian homes, towns, villages, and even refugee camps. As American Muslims, we are equally outraged by the continuous unconditional US support of Israeli aggression and the blocking of any United Nations’ Security Council resolutions aimed at curbing Israeli aggression.
The continuous US support of the Israeli disregard of the UN resolutions is unacceptable, illegal and immoral. These resolutions call for the total and unconditional withdrawal of the Israeli forces from the occupied territories. It confirms the right of the Palestinian people to return to their homes and lands. It also requires Israel to remove all settlements built as a result of occupation.
As a matter of our belief in justice and ethical principles, we, the undersigned Muslim Organizations hereby affirm our collective position regarding the Palestinian plight and the US foreign policy. Until Israel meets its obligations under international law and ends its oppression of the Palestinian people, we call on our government to:
- Stop the unconditional support for the Israeli aggression and the US abuse of the veto right in the United Nations, to honestly reflect the long acclaimed “honest broker”/”even-handed” status.
- Make the US aid to Israel contingent upon Israel’s compliance with International laws and its protection of human rights, as is the policy with other countries.
- The US must institute a mechanism to ensure that Israel never uses US made weapons to target or attack civilian populations under any circumstances.
These steps, we believe, are the only possible guarantees against the slow annihilation of the Palestinian people, and to ensure Israel against its perceived “insecurity”. These are the steps that should bring justice, and permanent peace to the region that has been rattled with five major regional wars in the past fifty-two years.
